MoltenWolf Glass, located on the waterfront in the heart of Kralendijk, is teaching local artists a new skill. The skill of glass fusing. Glass fusing brings a new dimension to how local artists can create unique art. While many glass makers want to keep their techniques to themselves, MoltenWolf Glass is all about sharing their knowledge with others. In fact, they even schedule monthly “Meet the Artist” Nights where you can learn about different topics and ask questions.
Glass fusing takes creativity, patience, and acceptance.
Glass fusing is a beautiful art form of melting different types of glass together. Throughout the process of creating an item, there are many steps. That’s why patience and acceptance are crucial. Just like any type of art, creativity is a must. Of course, sometimes the artwork takes on a life of its own, and you have to go with the flow. That is also the beauty of art. What you thought you were creating turns out to be completely different!
What exactly is glass fusing?
MoltenWolf Glass not only enjoys creating unique pieces of art, but they love teaching artists new skills. Since creativity cannot be taught, the first step is to learn the basics of glass fusing. Glass fusing is the process of fusing glass together, usually consisting of different sizes and shapes of glass sheets to create the design. Smaller pieces of glass can also be used, such as glass stringers, noodles, and even powdered glass. The artist takes various sizes and colors of glass and arranges them in a specific way to create their design. The glass is then fused together by melting it inside a kiln at approximately 1500 Fahrenheit (815 Celcius)! That is extremely HOT!
As the glass melts, which can take quite a long time, it will eventually create a single piece of glass. Once this step has been completed, the artist creating the design waits with their fingers crossed as it slowly cools off in hopes that the design turned out as expected.
Once the piece has cooled off, the artist can finally see the result of their hard work. Sometimes, it is exactly as they hoped, and sometimes it turns into something different. But that is art. Art can take on a life of its own.
