Kiteboarding on Bonaire: World-Class in Paradise

Kiteboarding is the perfect sport on Bonaire.

Bonaire’s year-round steady trade winds, clear warm water, and easy shore access make Bonaire the ideal destination for kite-boarders of all levels.  Bonaire’s excellent conditions make kiteboarding possible almost every day of the year.

Locations for Kiteboarding on Bonaire

Kiteboarding is done in various areas around Bonaire and Klein Bonaire.  However, the primary spot where most people congregate is on the southwest side of the island at the site called Atlantis.  At Atlantis, there is plenty of room to jump, fly, and cut through the water.  Look for the colorful kites flying through the air. Atlantis and all the waters around Bonaire are protected by the Bonaire Marine National Park rules and regulations. (Atlantis, site #57.)

Learning to Kite and Renting Equipment

Bonaire’s kiteboarding companies provide lessons and equipment rental.  They are committed to providing top-quality, safe, personalized kiteboarding instruction, and equipment for all levels, with specially designed kites and boards for fast learning.

When students are in the water, they are always accompanied by their instructor in a boat.  This allows the instructor to stay close for safety reasons, observation, and training poses and allows the student to focus on kiteboarding.  Shore access is easy, and as sailors advance, they can move out further into the deeper water and bigger waves for more challenges.

Lessons are available from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM or from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM.  With Bonaire’s steady trade winds, lessons can be given almost every day of the year.  Times can be adjusted to fit your schedule.  Food and beverages are also available.  Bring your sunscreen and your rashguard, as there isn’t much shade.

Kiteboarding can be taught to anyone who can swim and is at least ten years old.   Warm water, steady winds, and excellent instructors mean kiteboarding has never been easier or more accessible.

The Bonaire Marine Park

The fringing reef surrounding Bonaire is a National Marine Park from the high water mark down to a depth of 200 feet/60m. Every diver who has not dived on Bonaire within the last calendar year must attend a diver orientation for the Bonaire Marine Park regulations and information. Additionally, you are required to pay a nature fee, which is necessary to enter Bonaire's waters legally. The nature fee cost is US$40.00 for all water activities, and proceeds help support park management and services. The nature fee can be purchased online.

For information on dialing a Bonaire phone number from off-island, see the Phone page.
