Contract signed to expand water production.

Water and Energy Company Bonaire (WEB) signed a contract on May 15, 2023, with the company IDE Water Technologies Ltd. (IDE) for the expansion of our water plant in Hato. The contract is for two (2) additional units of Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) that convert seawater into drinking water. Each unit has a capacity of 1200m3 per day. The contract is officially called “Design and Construction Work Water plant Extension 2x1200m3/day pre-treatment, desalination- Design, Engineering, installation”. This means that the contractor is responsible for both the design and construction of the 2 units.

Drinking water production capacity.

Currently, the daily production of the water plant is 7200m3 of drinking water. After completion of the expansion, WEB will be able to produce 9600m3 of drinking water per day. Since the commissioning of the water plant in 2021, WEB has considered the need for expansion in order to continue to meet the growth of the Bonairean society and economy. The expansion of the water plant has been included in WEB’s long-term management plan and budget for 2023.

IDE

In 2021, WEB took over the water plant in Hato operationally. The water plant currently consists of five desalination units from the water desalination technology company, IDE, based in Israel. WEB selected IDE as part of a tender process for the expansion of the water plant.

Planning activities

The contractor will start work shortly. It is expected that WEB will be able to commission the two new units in mid-2024.
