Traditional Use of Medicinal Herbs

by | Oct 26, 2022 | Activities, Culture

Bonaire’s culture included a history of medicinal herbs.

In the past, when someone was sick, they were taken to an herbalist. The medicines they worked with consisted of medicinal herbs. For example, you had the medicine ‘ranka slime,’ gourd syrup, medicine for stomach pain, and ‘manteka bela.’ There are still people who can make these medicines.

The next edition of the cultural event of ‘Nos Zjilea’ will be on Saturday, October 29th, with the theme: “Traditional use of medicinal herbs.” Mrs. Letycia Beaumont, who has learned a great deal from her ancestors about medicinal herbs, will share her knowledge with us. She will give a presentation about the process of making tea naturally with local herbs and explain their benefits.

The habits we have concerning our eating patterns naturally influence our health. You are what you eat. Fish is a local dish that is considered very healthy. Mr. Julius Clarenda, a local fisherman, will give a presentation about our local fish species.
