Bonaire Culinair at Stadscafé Het Consulaat.

On Thursday evening, my friend Jessica Semeleer and I decided to be one of the first to enjoy the Bonaire Culinair dining menu at Stadscafé Het Consulaat, located in the heart of Kralendijk. Upon walking into the beautiful garden, we were greeted by friendly staff and escorted to our table. The atmosphere was cozy with just the right amount of lighting, large trees, and a display of colored lights on the treetops. From this moment on, we knew we were in for a treat!

Starting the night off right with cocktails.

Since both of us are rum enthusiasts, it was a no-brainer once we spotted the dark and stormy cocktail on the menu. The cocktail was the perfect mixture of rum, ginger beer, and a squeeze of lime. As we sipped our cocktails and toasted to another beautiful day in paradise, we chatted about our day and how lucky we are to be living on Bonaire.

The special Bonaire Culinair three-course menu.

Each restaurant participating in the Bonaire Culinair dining event prepares a special menu.  While some offer a set menu, others may opt to provide more choices.  At Stadscafé Het Consulaat, we could choose from two starters, three main courses, and a set dessert for dinner.

The appetizer course.

As we were making our choices for the night, we briefly talked about getting different appetizers, but in the end, we both wanted to enjoy the pumpkin soup as it is a typical Bonairian dish. Jessica described the pumpkin soup as “yummy deliciousness,” and I couldn’t agree more! The soup was creamy and had the perfect consistency of thickness. It was served with warm pita bread on the side and tasty cream puffs in the pumpkin soup. We both made sure to save a cream puff for our last bite!

The main courses.

My choice for the main course was the chicken stew with roasted garlic and rosemary. The entree immediately caught my eye on the menu, and it did not disappoint! The chicken stew, served with a fresh salad and warm pita bread, was perfect in every way. Cooked to perfection, the spices in the flavorful chicken stew melded together perfectly, and each bite was a burst of flavor. The entree was savory and delectable.

Jessica’s entree choice was the pumpkin pie with feta salad and caramelized red onions. Although some people might expect the pumpkin pie to be a dessert, it was a savory quiche made with phyllo dough. With hints of cinnamon, the blend of spices were complex and had a hint of spice at the end. The feta salad was full of fresh ingredients and packed a punch of flavor. Of course, the caramelized red onions complimented the savory dish wonderfully.

The dessert course.

The special menu for Bonaire Culinair offers a cold sabayon with marsala for dessert. The sabayon was slightly sweet but not overpowering. The crumble on top was an excellent combination of sweetness and enough to enjoy with every spoonful of the sabayon. Together, the components of the dessert worked splendidly, and it was the perfect ending to an amazing night at Stadscafé Het Consulaat.

Stadscafé Het Consulaat offers delicious courses and just the right size portions to leave you satisfied. As Jessica and I were leaving the restaurant, we discussed who we would be bringing with us to sample the culinary expertise again!
