The Bonairean government announces a price reduction for electricity.
The Bonairean island government and WEB NV have collaborated with the Dutch government on a proposal to reduce the price of electricity on Bonaire. The subsidy for a price reduction for electricity will go into effect on January 1, 2023. The flat rate, which currently averages $390, will be canceled as of January 1, 2023. In addition, half of the variable rate for electricity will be subsidized if this exceeds $ 0.38 per kWh. This arrangement applies to all customers of WEB NV and is in effect for at least one year. This subsidy is part of the ceiling for energy prices that have been introduced in the Netherlands.
The Bonairean island government works proactively to improve the purchasing power of society, but also provides the necessary support to small and medium-sized companies when necessary. The government is satisfied that after an intensive process together with WEB NV and the Dutch government, a concrete result has been achieved for the benefit of our society.
Locals have felt the impact of electricity bills skyrocketing.
Along with the pandemic, the war situation in Ukraine has affected the whole world and certainly Bonaire.
Over the last two years, we have felt these effects reflected in the price increases, which also apply to the price of electricity. This arrangement will be a relief for the entire Bonairean community. The most basic single-family home to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as charitable and cultural institutions and sports organizations, can benefit from this scheme. Electricity is a significant cost item in our homes and businesses. This reduction may also provide scope for a reduction in food prices, as has already been the case in the past.
The Bonairean island government itself has also proposed to reserve funds for the reduction in the cost of electricity to come into effect this year. This proposal is now with the Island Council to adopt a decision in the coming weeks.
The Bonairean island government is very grateful to the Dutch government for this support and to WEB NV who helped with the preparation of the proposal.
