Omicron Variant Identified on Bonaire

The Bonaire flag.

The Omicron variant has reached Bonaire.

Due to the Omicron variant spreading throughout the world as well as neighboring islands, we all knew it was just a matter of time before it reached Bonaire. Today, the Public Health Department released a statement confirming the discovery of the Omicron variant.

Below is a transcript of the latest announcement.

On Tuesday, December 28, 2021, the Omicron variant was identified on Bonaire .The Public Health Department sent 60 test samples to Aruba, and 17 of the 60 cases were confirmed as the Omicron variant.

It is striking that of the 60 test-result samples from Bonaire, more than a quarter of the cases are of the Omicron variant. This high proportion confirms what we know about this variant already: it spreads very easily and quickly.

Most of the people on Bonaire who were found to be infected with the Omicron variant were probably infected abroad. However, the Public Health Department believes that the Omicron variant is also spreading among the inhabitants of Bonaire since several Bonaire residents became infected with this variant without having traveled recently.

In recent days, we have seen that infections have decreased. This is probably a result of the fact that few people have been tested.

Now that the Christmas holidays are over, we expect the number of infections to rise again in the next days and coming weeks. Especially now that the Omicron variant is on the island, we can expect a rapid increase in infections.

It is now essential that everyone takes extra care, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated. Fully vaccinated people and people who have received the booster shot may still become infected with the variant, even though the booster shot increases protection against the virus. We ask everyone to remember to adhere to the basic rules. Keep 1.5 meters distance from each other and get tested if you develop symptoms. Wash your hands regularly, cough and sneeze into your elbow, do not shake hands. Avoid crowded places. Wear a mask in busy areas or when you are inside with many people. Ensure that the rooms at home and in the office are well ventilated.

Call the toll-free number 0800 0800 to make a test appointment if you have symptoms. If you test positive, adhere to the rules given to you by the Public Health Department. Stay at home if you have been in contact with someone who has been infected and call 0800 0800. If you have not had the first and second coronavirus vaccinations yet, or if you have had the two coronavirus shots but not the booster vaccination, please call the toll-free number 0800 0900 to make a vaccination appointment.
