Dive Site Renamed to Honor Bruce Bowker in an intimate ceremony.
In 2020, we lost Bruce Bowker in a tragic accident, and many have been mourning the loss ever since. Bruce was well-known near and far during his 45 years on Bonaire and the owner of Carib Inn. He was one of the founding fathers of the dive industry on Bonaire, an advocate for nature conservation, and an all-around friendly guy. His love for Bonaire was strong and unforgettable. It only seems fitting that the dive site, Rappel, should be renamed in memory of Bruce.
The history of Rappel’s name is quite a story!
In his younger years, Bruce was a fearless daredevil. Not many people would look over the side of a cliff with a significant steep drop and think that it would be an excellent dive entry. But Bruce did and found a way to enter the site to explore. With some help, he learned techniques to descend safely into the water in full scuba gear by rappelling down the cliff with rope! Once he scaled down the cliff and descended into the shallows, he saw a pristine, untouched reef that was quite unique. This is how the dive site, Rappel, first received its name.
Since the placement of the permanent moorings by STINAPA, it is no longer necessary to enter the dive site in this manner. Now, dive operations regularly take boat trips to Rappel so others can experience the unique dive site safely.
Renaming ceremony of Bruce’s Rappel.
On October 18, 2021, dive site #11 Rappel officially had its name changed to Bruce’s Rappel. Bruce’s family and dear friends were present to witness the unveiling of the new mooring by STINAPA. It was a small, intimate ceremony filled with tears, memories, and heartfelt speeches.
Bruce Bowker’s memory lives on and will never be forgotten. Carib Inn has been passed down to Bruce’s niece, Lynne Culbreth, who lives on the island. Lynne has continued to run Carib Inn in the same manner guests have become accustomed to, with friendly staff and love. There is no doubt that Bruce would be proud.
