Let’s Play Creole Music

The barrel organ is a musical instrument that consists of a wooden box, a cylinder with a maximum of eight songs, and a handle to turn the revolving cylinder to make music. The barrel organ is accompanied by a person playing an instrument locals call “Wiri”, which is a percussion musical instrument. The barrel organ is a cultural musical heritage that needs to be preserved, safeguarded, and maintained as part of the richness of our culture.

On Saturday, the 27th of May, the next edition of the cultural event “Nos Zjilea” will be at Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei with the theme: “Let’s Play Creole Music.” Mr. Frank Carolina will share his knowledge and experience about the barrel organ and the songs you can play. Afterward, he will demonstrate how to play the barrel organ while allowing you to try it out.

Ace Foundation will have various music workshops where the kids try different instruments. This year, the goal is to let the children get acquainted with different musical rhythms from around the globe but, most importantly, local and Caribbean rhythms. They will also learn the other instruments and dance that correspond with each beat. In the workshops at Mangazina di Rei, the focus will be on Creole music.

Don’t miss the cultural market with fresh local products such as locally produced natural juices, herbal teas, delicacies and local art. The kitchen opens at 10 am with a wide variety of soups and the possibility to taste local Creole dishes, including a delicious grill.

Enjoy the cozy atmosphere with “LIVE” performances by the local bands “Ace Kids Club,” “Kulturando,” and “Nikky Mix.”

Experience ‘Nos Zjilea’ this Saturday, May 27th from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei. It doesn’t get more local than this! For more information, please visit Mangazina di Rei’s Facebook fan page, www.facebook.com/mangazinadirei.
