Energy supply update on Bonaire.
On April 12, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate, Gerdine Keijzer-Baldé, visited Bonaire to discuss developments in the field of energy supply. During her visit, she spoke with Lieutenant Governor Edison Rijna and deputies Hennyson Thielman and Jolinda Craane about the need for the safe storage of fuels and the expansion of sustainable energy.
An important topic of discussion was the construction of new storage tanks to ensure the safe storage of fuels. The existing storage tanks no longer comply with legislation and regulations. The new fuel terminal will be located south of the airport so that it can be supplied via the existing pier.
Expanding sustainable energy
Parallel to constructing the necessary storage tanks for fuel, efforts are being made to expand sustainable energy. Keijzer-Baldé visited the Contour Global site in the north, where a new solar park is currently being built. In addition to panels to generate energy, there will be a battery to store this energy. The new solar park is expected to be commissioned in September of this year. In addition, the plans to renew and expand the current wind farm were discussed.
The investment for the new fuel terminal is made by Bonaire Fuel Terminals (BBT), founded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. BBT also invests in the new solar park and the future larger wind farm.
Lieutenant Governor Rijna is pleased with the attention to developments in the field of energy supply for Bonaire. All parties see the importance of rapid expansion and sustainability of energy for Bonaire, especially given the population growth and the increasing demand for energy.
